Waco is Coming

*gulp* Not really sure how these things start but here we go. I have always loved exercising. Lifting. Running. Biking. Pick up basketball. Tennis. What ever got me sweating and moving toward bettering my physical and mental health... Oh and winning. Not just winning a pick up basketball game but winning against my last week self. I enjoy thinking back to how much I lifted a month ago and how much more I can do today. Or how fast I ran a mile last week and running it faster this week. That’s a win, and it brings me a ton of joy to see what consistency and hard work can do.

I have told myself (and anyone around me that brought up triathlons) that I wanted to run an Iron Man before I turn 30. Not sure if it was being cooped up in the house for this past year or that feeling of I’ve said it for long enough I need to hurry up and do it but so begins my journey to do just that.

I told MaKenzie (my wife) that I was going to sign up for an Iron Man. After her asking me how far it is, and a few “David you almost drowned last time you did a tri” comments (which she’s right.. not swimming before any triathlon no matter how short it is.. bad idea. That is a story for a later blog post) and me saying “you’re right, you’re right” I decided my journey to run an Iron Man would best be started with doing a 1/2 Iron man so I signed up for the Ironman 70.3 Waco. Since I am 27 and not turning 28 until this August I should have plenty of time to do this half and follow it up with a full before 2023.

I wanted to do this blog for a few different reasons. First, I wanted a digital journal that I could come back too and see the amount of progress that can be made when you pursue a goal. If I actually stick with this and do the 2 posts a week that I say I am going to do then by the time I do the full Iron Man we might be looking at 100+ posts. SHEESH.

Second, I find joy in following other people’s ‘fitness journey’ (what a corny two words.. But you know what I mean). For those of you who are fans of Cameron Haynes, Nick Bare, or David Goggins or have seen them… PLEASE DON’T EXPECT NEAR WHAT THEY DO. But I thought it would be cool to 1) share what I enjoy doing and maybe other people would enjoy it too. 2) Have the level of accountability and motivation that having people follow/watch your workouts would bring.

Lastly, I want to create a brand. I named the blog Head, Lungs, Legs because when ever I am doing any endurance sports I’ve found that those three body parts are what effects my performance. If your mind is weak and you are on mile 3 of a 10 mile run you’re either going to stop early, walk or push through and rely on your legs and lungs to get to the end. When you’re on the bike and your legs are toast your head and lungs don’t let them stop. For me in the pool my lungs are always saying you are drowning but my mind calms me down and says slow, smooth and steady and you’ll get through it.

So, to my head, lungs and legs. Waco is coming.
