Montezuma's Revenge

I click baited you with the title. Not only did I not get ‘the runs’ from drinking Mexico tap water - I hardly ran at all this week. This post is actually about the oversight of starting a ‘fitness blog’ (wish I had a better genre name) and my workouts a week before attending a wedding at an all inclusive resort for five days.

Knowing that a beach wedding was approaching I decided to tailor my workouts less toward training for an Ironman and more toward BBD (Beach Body Dave). Not like one day of arms, one day of legs and shoulders, one day of chest and back, and ab circuits for two of the days are really going to make a difference. But, that is what I did. I sprinkled in 20 mins on the bike and 3.75 mi on the treadmill for two of those days but… mostly vanity for me this week.

On the trip I managed to make it to the gym for three of the five days. I can’t say they were the highest of quality workouts but it’s better than I thought I’d do considering the amount of food & alcohol consumed, and the lack of sleep I was getting each night. My friends are some of the greatest humans, but not the most conducive to getting a good nights rest or just having a few drinks. Other than my 3 ‘workouts’ I also managed at least one run on the beach because I wasn’t about to let myself be in Mexico and not, not do a beach run.

That was my week and here is a summary of the workouts:

Monday:

  • Bis and Tris (Everything is a super set)

    • Bar curls 4x10 -> Standing Scull crusher 4x10

    • Close grip cable curl 4x10 -> Triceps pope pull down 4x10

    • Not sure what to call this my last arm exercise but it is a good long superset that is virtually a burn out.. lol

    • ab circuit (may post this at a later date because there is a lot going on)

    • Finished up with 3.75 miles on the treadmill. Walk for .25 @ 3mph -> 1.0 @ 9.5mph -> .25 @ 3mph -> 1.0 @ 9.75 -> .25 @ 3mph -> 1.0 @ 10mph

Tuesday:

  • Chest and Back (Everything is a super set)

    • Dumbbell bench 4x10 -> Wide grip pull ups 4x8

    • Bosu ball push ups 4x15 -> Lat pull downs 4x10

    • Incline bench 4x10 -> Weighted row 4x10

    • Ab circuit

    • 20 min on bike @ 215 watts avg.

Wednesday:

  • Legs and Shoulders (everything is a super set)

    • Dumbbell military press 4x10 - Dumbbell front squat 4x10

    • Weight squats 4x10 -> Dumbbell fly 4x10

    • Barbell lunges 4x10 -> Barbell lunges

    • 10 min on bike -> 15-20min stretch

Thursday:

  • Travel day to Mexico

Friday:

  • Same arm work out as Monday minus the Bar curls 4x10 -> Standing Scull crusher 4x10

  • 3.0 miles on treadmill

Saturday:

  • Smith Machine bench press 4x10 -> Pull ups 4x6

  • Push ups 4x15 -> Lat pull downs 4x10

  • Close grip dumbbell bench press 4x15 -> Pull ups 4x5

  • 10 min spinner bike

Sunday:

  • Off day

Monday:

  • 1.79 mile run on the beach @ 9.07/mi pace

My head was super out of it this week. I was motivated before we traveled but once I was at the resort the last thing I wanted to do was go to the gym. I knew I would feel better if I went and even still I dreaded going. While there, I didn’t really work hard or push myself. In short, the legs and lungs had it super easy but as I write this I am back in Austin and my head is ready to put my legs and lungs through the wringer.

Goals for next week:

  • 20+ miles running

  • 5.5 hours on the bike (Weather says its going to rain all week so I’ll be on the spinner)

  • 60 min in the pool

  • 60 min of weight training/stretching
